Nati a Los Angeles nei primi anni '80 attorno al cantante Anthony Kiedis e al bassista Flea, i Rhcp pubblicano ben tre album che non lasciano grandi tracce: Red Hot Chili Peppers (1983), Freaky Styley (1985) e The uplift mofo party plan (1987).
Bisogna aspettare che passino i furori funk-metallici per arrivare al più interessante Mother's milk (1989) che raggiunge vendite da disco d'oro. IL chitarrista John Frusciante prende il posto di Hillel Slovak, morto per overdose.
Musicalmente cresciuti, i Red Hot Chili Peppers sono dunque pronti per il salto nel vero show-biz: nel 1991 lasciano la Emi America e firmano il contratto con la Warner, che consente loro di farsi conoscere anche dal grande pubblico europeo. Lo stesso anno pubblicano Blood sugar sex magik, la loro opera più ambiziosa e monumentale, che fa il poker di dischi di platino. Un successo meritato. I Rhcp dimostrano di essere infatti una delle realtà più stimolanti del panorama musicale internazionale. E questo grazie alla riuscita fusione di rap-funky e rock energetico.
